When to Switch to Summer Tyres?

When to Switch to Summer Tyres?

Spring is a moment many drivers look forward to: the snow melts, roads dry out, and driving becomes easier. At the same time, the question arises — when is the right time to switch from winter tyres to summer tyres? In this article, we go through the most important rules and tips for choosing the right moment.

The +7 Degree Rule

The most commonly used rule of thumb in Finland is +7 degrees Celsius. When the outside temperature consistently stays above seven degrees both day and night, it is safe to switch to summer tyres. The technology of the tyres is based on this temperature: winter tyres are made from a softer rubber compound designed to perform best in the cold. Above seven degrees, summer tyres offer better grip, handling, and less wear.

Do not switch too early just because a few warm days have passed. Monitor night-time temperatures — overnight frost can still catch you off guard in April in southern Finland and in May further north.

Finnish Legislation

Under Finnish Road Traffic Act, studded tyres may be used from 1 November to 31 March. Outside this period, a vehicle fitted with studded tyres may still be used if weather conditions require it. The use of summer tyres is not restricted by law — the responsibility for choosing appropriate tyres always rests with the driver.

Friction tyres are a flexible option throughout the year and are not restricted by law. They handle slippery conditions better than summer tyres even in summer, but on warm asphalt, summer tyres always provide the best grip.

Signs That It Is Time to Switch

  • Night-time temperature stays clearly above zero — no more frost even in northern regions
  • Roads are dry or wet, not icy — spring slippery conditions have passed
  • The calendar shows May — in southern Finland it is often safe already in April
  • The Finnish Meteorological Institute forecasts stable weather — no cold spells in the coming weeks

Remember also that soft winter tyres wear significantly faster on warm asphalt. Switching at the right time is therefore not just a safety issue, but also an economic choice.

Check Tyre Condition Before Switching

Before fitting summer tyres, it is worth checking their condition after winter storage:

  1. Tread depth — The legal minimum depth is 1.6 mm, but for safety reasons the recommendation is at least 3 mm. Below 3 mm, wet grip deteriorates significantly.
  2. Tyre sidewalls and surfaces — Check for cracks, scratches, or uneven wear. These may indicate a need for balancing or alignment.
  3. Air pressure — Tyres lose pressure in storage. Check the correct pressure from the sticker on the car's door pillar or the owner's manual.
  4. Wheel condition — Check that the wheels have no dents or corrosion that could cause an air leak.

If you are unsure about the condition of your tyres, take them to a professional workshop for inspection before driving.
