Friction Tyres

Friction tyres — also known as studless winter tyres — are an excellent choice for Finnish winter conditions, especially for city driving. Finnish law mandates the use of winter tyres from 1 December to 28 February, but they are recommended for use from October to the end of March whenever roads are slippery.

Friction tyres do not require studs, because their specialist rubber compound and lamella structure provide excellent grip even on snow and ice. Friction tyres are quieter than studded tyres, cause less wear to road surfaces, and are better suited to urban environments and the winter conditions of central Europe.

Compared to studded tyres, friction tyres perform slightly less well on pure ice, but technology in modern friction tyres has advanced considerably. Choose friction tyres if you drive mainly in the city or town, where road surfaces vary between wet asphalt and slush.
